Sashakt - A society for Womens' Empowerment

In India, gender-based discrimination is a deep-rooted social malice since long time. Addressing this sensitive issue and women empowerment is a long drawn battle against powerful structural and male-biased forces of the society. Though women constitute nearly 50% of our population yet they lag behind in exposure to equal opportunities for their comprehensive all round personality development in – education, sports and even career options, to name a few. This is in contradiction to the principle of gender equality protected in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble; Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. The Constitution not only grants equality to women, but also empowers the State to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women. Consequently, women empowerment is one of the key factors in determining the success of development in the status and position of women in the society.
The College took an initiative on women empowerment, realizing that it was all about making focussed efforts towards not just physical or psychological but complete personality development involving medical counselling, sex education and laws on women rights, etc. To fulfil this objective, a society named ‘Sashakt’ was set up in 2003 with an aim towards welfare and development of the women students and  faculty members by providing equal rights and opportunities; and a platform for growth ensuring their progress.

Sashakt organizes the activities that

  • empower female students and staff of the college,
  • help women understand the laws and regulations on sexual harassment,
  • educate students and staff on how to prevent and cope  with harassment,
  • campaign on prevention of sexual harassment,
  • address women-related issues in society and
  • create awareness on gender-sensitization

The society uses films, posters, banners, lectures, discussion etc. as tools to create awareness and educate the college community about the legal provisions available under “Ordinance XV(D) of the University of Delhi” against sexual harassment at workplace.  Besides, the society also takes up issues related to adolescent girls, female foeticide, dowry, cervical and breast cancer, cyber crime etc. Along with, Sashakt also organizes ten-day long 'Self Defence training programme' regularly in association with the 'Crime against women' cell of the Delhi Police to empower students and staff.

Empowering women is a cause that needs continued attention and stewardship by all requiring a united approach. We have endeavoured to provide opportunities to the female students and staff discuss, learn and share their views through interactions with key leaders of their respective fields. Concentrated and conscious efforts have been made by Sashakt over years to bring experts including- psychologists, women rights activists, cyber law experts, sex education experts and medical experts to interact with the students, on-spot medical evaluation and answering student queries pertaining to their personal and common issues.
